This unique and personal approach to graphic drawing,was obvious at his early age,when he has absorbed the fundamentals cartooning skills by his father.At the age of 18 he had a solo exhibition at Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center,and at the same year he went to study at New York's School Of Visual Arts,and became friends with others artists (such as Jean-Michel Basquiat) and people from all over entertainment fields and begun to organize and participate to exhibitions at alternative venues and places.
Haring was also inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Gysin and Robert Henri’s manifesto The Art Spirit, which asserted the fundamental independence of the artist and began to create drawings in white chalk upon blank paper panels throughout the subway system.He became famous by creating hundrents of "paintings" (between 1980 -1989) at sudways,where was the artist "modus vivendi".
Pop shop (april 1986) has been the next step,as a way of extension by creating and selling objects drawn by the artist's graphics,in a variety of prices and in a unique shopping enviroment,were Keith Haring has decorated the shop, with his famous graphics. Haring remained committed to his desire to make his artwork available to as wide an audience as possible, and received strong support for his project from friends, fans and mentors including Andy Warhol,although many people of the world of arts were not like the idea.
Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created for charities, hospitals and children’s day care centers.He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and during a brief but intense career that spanned the 1980s, Haring’s work was featured in over 100 solo and group exhibitions and died of AIDS related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990 and this work can be seen today in the exhibitions and collections of major museums around the world.
