By 1952 small hats set straight on the head were coming into fashion,while at the same time close fitting cap styles bugging the back of the head, were still very popular .The "half hats" were in cogue for dressy occasions,when the rest popular shapes were oval or round of straw or velvet curved and stiffened to fit snugly on the top of the head.A lot of examples of hat at that period were consisted of rings or loops of straw or stiffenednfabric trimmed with flowers and veiling.A more formal occasion (wedding,coctail party) a piece of veiling trimmed with a few little velvet bows or a large artificial flower might replace the more conventional hat.In general hats were very small and were of the pill box or pancake style or a cloche and beret type set on the back of the head or slightly to the side.
The royal family members had continued to wear the headscarf and with the return to formality in dress many affected to despise this peasant headwear as unbecoming but,regardless of changing fashions in hairstyles it still retained as a comfortable covering for outdoor wear in cold and wet weather.These scarves were produced by thousants in a variety of materials silk-nylon (expensive-cheap) and colours.
The most unusual materials for hats during the post-war era were straw and felt with velvet,jersey,wool and fur for winter.A veriety of other style of hats was being worn,including some with halo trims,and close fitting styles were still to be seen.Towards the end of the decade fairly large dipped brims were the latest style to be introduced and for winter wear large fur hats,were extremely popular,as were all kinds of wooly caps.
Women approaching middle age had become used to going without hats during the war and now found the novelty of the New Look and post-war interest in hats wearing thin.Younger women who had never acquired the habit of wearing a hat as an essential part of outdoor wear,tended to buy something soft and comfortable for winter or to acquire a hat only for special events such as weddings.Whatever the reason for the decline in hat-wearing in everyday life most women seemed to feel that for special occasion at least a hat was still a necessity.
